Kevork S. Hovnanian, founder of one of the nation's leading homebuilders and winner of several prestigious awards, could stand as an icon for the American Dream. When Mr. Hovnanian started his home-building company in 1959, he had one basic philosophy: Build the best possible homes at affordable prices and treat people fairly. After leaving the Middle East during a revolution and arriving in Philadelphia, Mr. Hovnanian saw his successful road building company nationalized. He settled in New Jersey and, with his three brothers, founded the company that eventually became Hovnanian Enterprises. His brothers eventually started their own businesses. To maintain his competitive edge, Mr. Hovnanian introduced several innovations. He was one of the first builders to use computer controls. He also added a recreational package that promotes an active, low-maintenance lifestyle for people of all ages. In 1983, Mr. Hovnanian and his staff took the company public.
